The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the Robbinsville Township Police Department reported today that the investigation into the April 19, 2016 crash that killed Robbinsville School Superintendent Dr. Steven J. Mayer and his dog has concluded and charges have been filed against the female driver.

Complaints were signed Thursday morning charging the 18-year-old with death by auto and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, both second-degree offenses.

The teen, whose name is being withheld because she was a juvenile at the time of the offense, was also issued citations charging her with reckless driving, improper use of a cell phone while driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team and the Robbinsville Township Police Department conducted a comprehensive investigation of the circumstances related to Mayer's death, including the review of witness statements and physical evidence, as well as a crash reconstruction.

The complaints charge that on April 19, 2016, at approximately 6:16 a.m., while in the area Robbinsville-Edinburg Road just north of the Pond Road intersection, the 17-year-old driver operated a motor vehicle in a reckless manner causing Mayer's death, specifically by talking on a cell phone at or about the time of impact, and then left the scene knowing the crash occurred.

She will be required to appear in Family Court before a Superior Court judge, however that hearing date has not been determined. Juvenile hearings are not open to the public.

Under state law, the identities of juvenile defendants are protected.
